Kanab horseback riding: three rides, three landscapes
Kanab horseback riding is a short outing rather than a day-long expedition. The three rides last between one hour and 90 minutes: a slot canyon ride from Orderville, an evening ride near East Zion and a trail through a private canyon at the edge of Kanab.
Two of the rides take riders from 8 years old, and the evening ride starts at 10. Prices run from $70 to $105 per person.
Bring long trousers and closed shoes.

Three rides: a slot canyon ride, an evening ride with Zion views and a trail through a private canyon.
White Mountain ride: horses to a slot canyon
It starts in Orderville with a briefing, then the group rides to the entrance of a slot canyon. You get off the horses, walk a short way into the canyon and ride back afterwards, so it is not a pure trail ride: the walk is short.
Riders must be at least 8 years old and under 220 lb, and no experience is needed. The ride runs outside Zion National Park, so no park pass is required. In heavy weather the tour can be cancelled, and the provider offers a rebooking or a full refund. Bring at least 2 litres of water, long trousers and closed shoes you can also walk in, plus warm layers in autumn and winter.
Checkerboard evening ride: Zion views at dusk
The Checkerboard ride is a guided trail ride of 90 minutes in the evening, starting in East Zion, with views toward Zion. Riders must be at least 10 years old.
The price includes a certified guide, plus horses, saddles and reins. Bring at least 2 litres of water and sturdy shoes, and add a hat, gloves and a coat when evenings turn cold. It suits anyone who would rather ride in the evening.
Cave Lakes Canyon: a private canyon near town
The Cave Lakes Canyon ride starts at a ranch in Kanab and lasts 90 minutes. The trail enters a private canyon a quarter mile in and passes meadows and small lakes on the way to a meadow at the back. Groups are limited to 10 riders.
Riders must be at least 8 years old and under 220 lb. The operator asks you to report health problems or special needs in advance, and recommends a doctor's advice if you have back or heart conditions. It suggests spring and autumn, or early morning and late afternoon in summer, for the most comfortable ride. Horses and a guide are included.
